StoryKnit helps families gather stories about someone they've lost and turn them into a hardcover book. Doing that means we hold some very personal things: names, memories, photos, and the sound of people's voices. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, who can see it, and how to ask us to change or remove it.
The people this policy covers
Three kinds of people use StoryKnit, and we collect a little from each:
- Organizers create a project about a person who has passed and invite others to contribute.
- Contributors share their memories in a recorded conversation with our virtual interviewer.
- The person being remembered is described in the project by the organizer and the contributors.
What we collect
- From organizers: your name, email address, and a phone number if you choose to give one.
- From contributors: your name and an email address and/or phone number, so we can send you a link back to your interview and gentle reminders.
- About the person being remembered: their name, important dates, a short biography or obituary, and photos the organizer and contributors add.
- Interview recordings and transcripts: when a contributor talks with the virtual interviewer, the conversation is recorded and turned into a written transcript. That transcript is what becomes the story in the book.
- Book orders: a shipping address and payment. Card details are handled by Stripe, our payment processor. StoryKnit never sees or stores your card number.
How we use it
We use this information for one purpose: to make the book. Specifically, to
- run the interview and write each contributor's story from their transcript,
- let the organizer see who has shared and how the book is coming together,
- send the emails and texts that keep everyone in the loop (invitations, links, reminders, order updates),
- print and ship the finished book, and
- answer your questions when you contact us.
We don't use your stories, photos, or recordings for anything else.
Who can see it
Your information is shared with two groups only: the project's organizer, and the StoryKnit staff who help produce the book. We never sell your information, and we never share it with advertisers.
To run the service we rely on a few companies that handle specific jobs on our behalf:
- ElevenLabs runs the live voice interview and produces the transcript. Your audio passes through their service during the conversation.
- Resend sends our email.
- Stripe processes payments.
- Our own servers. Project data, photos, recordings, and transcripts are kept in a database and file store that we host on a server we control.
Each of these companies is allowed to use your information only to do the job we have hired them for.
Cookies and tracking
We use a cookie to keep you signed in, and one to remember the choices below.
On our website we also use Google Analytics, to count visits and see which pages help, and the Meta Pixel, to learn whether a visit came from one of our ads on Facebook or Instagram. When you start a book or pay for one, we tell Google and Meta that it happened, with a scrambled (hashed) copy of your email so Meta can match it to an ad. We never send them your stories, photos, recordings, or the name of the person the book is about, and we remove sign-in links and invite codes from every address before it is sent.
The ad tools never run on the pages contributors use to share their stories. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your information, and the ad tools stay off.
Your privacy choices
Where your information lives
StoryKnit is based in the United States and your information is stored on servers we control. If you use StoryKnit from outside the US, your information will be transferred to and kept in the US.
How long we keep it
We keep project information for as long as it's needed to produce and support the book. You can ask us to delete your information at any time, and we'll honor that request.
Your choices
- Ask for a copy. Anyone can ask for a copy of the information we hold about them by emailing stories@storyknit.co.
- Ask us to delete it. Email the same address and we'll remove your information.
- Remove your recording. If you contributed a story and change your mind, you can ask to have your recording removed from the project. Include the name of the person the book is about so we can find it quickly.
Children
StoryKnit is not intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, please contact us and we'll remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information, we'll update this page and the date at the top. For meaningful changes, we'll also let organizers know by email.
