Terms of Service

Last updated: September 17, 2026

These are the terms that apply when you use StoryKnit, whether you're organizing a book or sharing a story for one. We've tried to write them the way we'd explain them to a friend. By using StoryKnit you agree to them, so please read through.

What StoryKnit is

StoryKnit is a memory book service. An organizer creates a project about a person who has passed away and invites family and friends to contribute. Each contributor records a voice conversation with our virtual interviewer, and we turn those conversations, along with photos, into a hardcover book the organizer can order.

Pricing and payment

  • Creating a project and collecting stories is free. There is no charge to organize, invite people, or record interviews, and the organizer can read the first three stories at no cost.
  • When the third story is shared, the organizer reserves the book with a $99 deposit. The deposit includes one full color hardcover of the finished book, whatever its length, with free standard shipping to one US address, and opens every story, the proof and the digital (PDF) copy. It is a one-time payment, not a subscription. Until it is paid, stories after the third are kept safe and shown as received, and their text opens when the book is reserved. People sharing stories are never asked to pay.
  • Additional copies are $49 in black and white and $79 in full color. Each price includes up to 200 pages; longer books add a small per-page amount, shown before you pay. Several copies in one order are discounted by the total number of copies, up to 20%. The included copy is credited at its full price on the order that uses it.
  • One order can ship to several US addresses. Standard shipping to the first address is free and each further address is $7.95; express shipping is available at the rates shown at checkout. We ship within the United States only for now.
  • Prices are in US dollars and shown before applicable sales tax. Where tax applies it is added at checkout, and the full total is shown before you pay.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. StoryKnit never sees or stores your card number.
  • The current prices are always on our pricing page. If they change, the change applies to new deposits and new orders, not to a book that is already reserved.

Refunds and our 30-day guarantee

Before printing. If you change your mind at any time before your book goes to print, we refund the whole $99 deposit, no questions asked. Nothing is printed until you approve the proof.

After printing. We want you to love the book. If you don't, let us know within 30 days of receiving it and we'll refund what you paid for it. If a book arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint it free. Because each book is made for you alone, we can't reprint for something that was visible in the proof you approved, so please read it carefully. Just email us at stories@storyknit.co with your order details.

Your stories and photos belong to you

Contributors keep all rights to the words they share and the photos they upload. Organizers keep the rights to what they add, too. We don't claim ownership of any of it.

So that we can actually make the book, you give StoryKnit and the project's organizer permission (a license) to use what you contribute to produce the book and digital copies of it, to show it to the organizer and to other people working on the same project, and to let StoryKnit staff edit it for the book. We don't use your contributions for anything outside the project.

Photos of other people

If you include photos in a book, you are responsible for having permission from the people who took them and, where needed, the people who appear in them. The organizer is responsible for making sure the photos in the finished book can be used this way.

Recording consent

Interviews with the virtual interviewer are recorded and transcribed. That's how we capture your story. When you press the button to start an interview, you are agreeing to be recorded. If you later want a recording removed from a project, email us and we'll take care of it. Our Privacy Policy explains who can hear the recordings and how they're handled.

Using StoryKnit kindly

StoryKnit exists to honor people. Please don't use it to

  • harass, threaten, or defame anyone, living or deceased,
  • upload content you don't have the right to share,
  • create a project about a real person as a prank or to cause distress,
  • attempt to access other people's projects or information, or
  • interfere with the service or the people who use it.

StoryKnit is not for children under 13.

When we may step in

If a project is being used in a way that breaks these terms or harms someone, we may pause or remove it. Where we can, we'll reach out to the organizer first. We may also close accounts that repeatedly misuse the service.

What we're responsible for, and what we're not

We'll do our best to keep StoryKnit working well and to make a book you're proud of. But we're a small service and things can go wrong. So, in plain words:

  • StoryKnit is provided as it is. We can't promise it will always be available or free of errors.
  • We aren't responsible for what contributors say in their stories or for photos the organizer chooses to include.
  • If something we do causes you a loss, the most we'll owe you is the amount you paid us for the book in question. We aren't responsible for indirect losses, such as lost time or emotional distress, except where the law says we can't limit that.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the law that we can't limit.

Governing law

StoryKnit is based in the United States. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Hampshire, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If we ever have a dispute, we'll try to work it out with you directly first.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page, and for meaningful changes we'll let organizers know by email. Continuing to use StoryKnit after a change means you accept the updated terms.
