Everyone who loves them has a story. Give them all of it at once.

Family, friends and colleagues each talk with StoryKnit's interviewer for twenty minutes. Their stories become chapters. You read every page, and a hardcover arrives in time for the day.

A book arrives at your door

Each person's stories become their chapter. You read the proof, and a hardcover book arrives.

Inside the book

These pages are from the sample above, exactly as the printer receives them.

A chapter opener: Chapter 2, Joan Adler, her younger sister, the story title Spilled Punch at the Elks, and a black-and-white photograph from a 1966 dance
A two-page spread of story text in a serif typeface, with running heads and page numbers

A chapter for each person

Every chapter opens with who is speaking and how they knew them, on a right-hand page, with a photo when there is one.

Their stories, each with a title

One conversation becomes three, four or five stories. The contents page lists them under the person, so a reader can find the canoe story by all three people who tell it.

Set like a real book

Six by nine inches, hardcover, a serif that reads well, running heads and page numbers. Nothing on the page says it came from a website.

Everyone participates. Nobody has to write.

A card goes around the office and comes back with forty signatures and nothing in it. With StoryKnit, each person has a warm conversation with our virtual interviewer, by voice or by typing, and says the thing they would never have written down.

  • 30 people can contribute, not just the 3 who would write
  • Works on any phone or computer; no app to install
  • It stays a surprise — the interviewer never tells them what anyone said

Nothing prints until you have read it.

The stories come to you as chapters, one per person. You are the editor, and the tools are the ones a careful editor wants.

  • Read every story as it arrives, and the transcript beside it
  • Change a line, or ask for it shorter or warmer, and keep every version
  • Fix a misspelled name across the whole book at once
  • Put the chapters in the order you want, leave one out, add photos
  • Choose a cover, read the proof, and only then order

Most people never hear what they meant to everyone who knows them.

A birthday comes with a card and a toast. This is the other thing — thirty people saying the specific thing they remember, written down and bound, handed to them while they are here to read it.

Will the book arrive in time for our date?

For a celebration, tell us the date when you start. Once you approve the proof, printing and delivery take 2 to 3 weeks, and we tell you the last day to order. Most families gather stories over a few weeks, so start about six weeks before the day.

Is it only for someone who has died?

No. A StoryKnit book can celebrate someone who is very much here: a 50th birthday, a 40th anniversary, a graduation. Tell us the occasion when you start, and the interviewer, the writing and the book follow.

What if someone isn't comfortable with technology?

They only need a phone or computer with a microphone. There's nothing to install: they open the link and talk, or type if they prefer. The interviewer is patient and warm, and you're welcome to sit with them while they share.

How many people can share stories?

As many as you'd like. There's no limit. Each person gets their own chapter, and every voice makes the book richer.

Can I edit the book before it prints?

Yes. You read every story before anything prints. You can edit the words, choose the chapter order and decide what goes in, and nothing prints until you approve the proof.

Who can see the stories?

Only you, as the organizer, and the StoryKnit staff who help make the book. We never sell your information or share it with advertisers.

What if I change my mind?

Before printing, we refund the whole $99, no questions asked. After printing, tell us within 30 days if the book isn't what you hoped for and we refund what you paid for it. If a book arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint it free.

Tell them while they're here to read it.
